At New Heights Charter School, we know that every class, experience and opportunity is an opportunity for students to grow and learn. As an early college school, we uphold a standard of personal responsibility, accountability, community involvement, safety and of course fun. The Culture Team at New Heights play a pivotal role in cultivating and maintaining these standards. By integrating specific systems to uphold schoolwide policies and standards, this team partners with staff, students and families to ensure that the school’s cultural framework is aligned with school values. Their responsibilities span from supporting teachers, discipline, restorative practices, family engagement and scholar development.”

Teacher training in culturally responsive methods is crucial for supporting this inclusive culture. It equips educators to address and celebrate their students’ diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, fostering deeper connections and improving classroom dynamics. Similarly, encouraging discussions about students’ language and interactions promotes self-awareness and mutual respect, which are vital for a collaborative learning environment.

The culture at New Heights is characterized by its commitment to equity, consistency, and the empowerment of every student. What sets it apart is its holistic approach, which combines clear systems—such as Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and structured daily routines—with community-building initiatives like Community Days. These efforts are rooted in the school’s guiding philosophy of fostering academic success through meaningful relationships and a sense of belonging. This philosophy is evident in the emphasis on consistent communication, restorative practices, and opportunities for students to express themselves and connect with their peers and teachers.

What is a Learning Partnership?

Learning Partnerships provide an approach to ensuring that students outside of the sphere of success will have access to all the social, emotional, and educational opportunities they deserve. The learning that comes from these partnerships can guide educators to new approaches to classroom practices and routines that can benefit every student in their care.

Learning partnerships require the educator to deeply learn about a student: who they are, how they think, how they learn, and their perceptions of self. This partnership is not just positive rapport; it is built in service of the student’s learning and development of essential skills for success in school and life.

At New Heights we believe the most successful learning partnerships include not only the students, their teachers, but their families as well. Events such as Family Forums and the Annual Back to School Event serve to provide families with opportunities to interact with New Heights teachers and staff in a proactive and positive manner, while best practices such as phone calls home, parent meetings and grade level parent meetings provide opportunities for parents to collaborate with teachers and staff to support their scholars behaviorally and academically on their path to college and beyond.
